8 Places To Check Out While Studying Abroad In Austria

When you are presented with options on where you can study abroad, you likely opt for places like England, Ireland, Japan, or Germany. However, there are less popular options that are just as great. One of these places is Austria. This country has many beautiful cities and also is close to other European countries. As German is the language that is spoken, it is a perfect alternative for studying in Germany if you want to practice your German language skills. When you have some time to explore, there is plenty to check out.

1. Salzburg

Salzburg is where “The Sound Of Music” took place. It is also the birthplace of Mozart, and you can visit his birthplace and residence within the city. The city is full of baroque architecture such as castles and churches. If you are into food, Europe’s oldest restaurant, St. Peter’s Abbey, calls Salzburg home. For those who love art, the city has the Museum of Modern Art. The Museum of Natural History and Technology is the perfect place for any science buff. Check out the Mirabel Palace if you love architecture.

2. The Alps

The Alps are a mountain range that spans across Europe, so it is no surprise that they are in Austria. In fact, there is even an Austrian national park within the Alps. The Hohe Tauern features a variety of tours and trails that offer a variety of gorgeous scenic views. It also offers a variety of learning opportunities, which is perfect if you want to be a park ranger or are interested in science. Besides the mountains, the Alps contain a variety of animal and plant species. One of the most popular destinations is Zell Am See, where options for outdoor recreational activities like fishing and skiing abound. 3. Innsbruck

Innsbruck is surrounded by the Alps. Whether you love architecture or shopping, you will find something you love here. You can also visit the Golden Roof, which is a house that was constructed for the Holy Roman Emperor, Maximillian I, using gilded copper tiles, which makes it look like pure gold. Other noteworthy pieces of architecture to check out include Helblinghaus, Stadtturm, Hofburg, and many more. The city is also home to Alpenzoo and several places to go skiing.

4. Hallstatt

Hallstatt is known for its salt production, so it has a history of wealth and prestige. If you visit Hörnerwerk cavern’s subterranean salt lake, you can see the prehistoric man preserved in salt. If you want to check out something unique, go to the Hand.Werk.Haus museum, which showcases the city’s love of woodworking. Also, check out the Beinhaus, which houses bones and skulls from the past eight centuries.

5. Vienna

Vienna is Austria’s capital, which is reason enough to visit, but it has a ton to offer. If you are a music lover, check out a performance at the Vienna State Opera. It is one of the many landmarks on Ringstraße, so there are plenty of other options if you do not want to go to the opera. The city is also known for its coffeehouses and wineries. There are a wide variety of museums such as Mozarthaus Vienna, Liechtenstein Palaces, and the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna that show off the city’s rich culture of art and architecture.

6. Hochosterwitz Castle

This castle is known as Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. It is home to 14 gates that were designed to protect the castle and those within it. Visitors can reach the castle by taking a railway to the top. The castle hosts an armory that is home to weapons from the 14th century. The armory is open for the public to visit and enjoy.

7. Krems

For those who enjoy exploring new places on foot, Krems is the place to visit. The city is known for its wine, with it being home to a wine museum called The Weinstadmuseum as well as several tasting rooms and wineries throughout the city. Krems is also known for a castle called Gozzoburg, which is home to some of the oldest secular frescoes in the world.

8. Bordering countries

Austria is bordered by the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Italy, and Switzerland. This is a perfect chance to check out a place such as Germany or Italy if you could not study abroad there. You can also check out the other countries to learn about other cultures. It is important to learn about Austria’s culture first since you are studying there, but you can go to other countries when you have some free time.

Studying abroad in any country is special, but it is especially nice when you get to study in a place that is less common since you get unique opportunities to see things that no one else gets to see. This is especially true in Austria. While focusing on your studies is important, take some time to absorb the rich culture and history of Austria and the surrounding countries.
