Benefits of Community College

By Ashley Paskill on April 8, 2018

Community colleges often get a bad rep for being inferior to four-year colleges. In reality, this is not the case. Community college allows students to get a degree at a great value. Though many go on to get four-year degrees or higher, those who choose to get just an Associate’s still receive many benefits that community college offers.

1. Lower cost

One of the greatest things about community college is the low cost. These colleges offer lower tuitions for students, especially for students who live in the county the college is located in. Even if students transfer before getting their Associate’s, they have the ability to get general education classes out of the way at a lower cost. Many students at four-year colleges and universities take classes at a community college over the summer because of their affordability and ability to transfer a quality course to the requirement needed.

2. A chance to transition into the college experience

For many students, the thought of going to a four-year college right out of high school is a daunting thought. They are often unsure what they want to major in or if college is even right for them. They are unwilling to waste money on something that they will not complete. Community college is a great way to feel out the college experience. Students have the ability to live at home, which eases them into the college experience. If they decide that college is not for them, they feel better about the decision since community college is inexpensive.

3. Flexible schedule

Many community college students have things going on outside of the classroom. While many are students right out of high school, several students are older students with jobs. Many have kids of their own or are even veterans. Community college allows students to fit classes into their schedule. There are early classes as well as night classes. This allows students to learn while being able to join organizations and hold a life outside of college.

4. Qualified professors and quality classes

One of the biggest misconceptions about community college is that the classes are at a lower level than four-year college classes and that the professors are not qualified. This could not be further from the truth. Classes taken at a community college are on equal footing as those at four-year colleges and universities. Most classes transfer over and are as challenging, if not more challenging, than those taken at four-year colleges. The professors at community colleges are often experts in their fields and many teach at community college and four-year schools.
